WAYS OF SEEING COASTAL November 2011
This exhibition brings together recent paintings by Nicole Gilding which explore ways of seeing and capturing the light, colour, form and experience of the coast. The work is about the essence of place rather than its recreation on canvas. You may not even recognise some of the local coastal places which have inspired the work. I am fascinated by the littoral space where land meets sea, and by the experiences we have by the coast.
The exhibition began with work selected from a major series – Landscape and Memory – produced after a trip to England and Wales during the late summer and autumn of 2010 during which I explored landscape, both experienced and imagined, as abstracted colour images rather than representational pictures. Landscape is as much psychological as geographical; its meaning defined by culture and by personal histories. I turned also to reimagine the much loved places on the Fleurieu (from Port Willunga to Goolwa) which were so important to me in childhood, and which retain a special magic for me. Winter or summer, the experience of the coast is essentially cleansing: good for the soul!
